Program Overview

The College of Arts and Sciences offers a graduate level certificate program for students seeking training in teaching at the college level in a science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics (STEM) related discipline. A typical candidate plans to become a faculty member, whether a tenure-track professor or lecturer at a graduate-degree granting college or university, a 4-year college or university, or a faculty member at a 2-year college. Through required coursework and teaching internships, the certificate program offers an opportunity to STEM graduate students to become exceptionally qualified instructors at the post-secondary level.

The College STEM Teaching graduate certificate program is designed to extend and deepen the science background of its students through teaching in their STEM disciplines, as well as provide strong preparation in research-based pedagogical aspects of STEM teaching and learning, including high-quality, extended teaching internships at Tallahassee State College or FSU STEM Departments. These teaching experiences are documented in students' transcripts and strengthen their CVs.

Typical students fit into one of two categories: (1) those pursuing the certificate as a stand-alone program after completion of a MS or PhD degree in a STEM discipline, or (2) those pursuing the certificate concurrently with a graduate degree in one of FSU’s STEM departments with the permission of both programs.
